A traveller searches for your hotel. Google, TripAdvisor or trivago shows your property beside competing hotels, your available rooms, your prices and the channels selling them. The guest clicks. They then book through your website or an OTA.
That distinction matters. An OTA takes a commission from the booking. Metasearch usually charges for the click, the booking or the visibility, depending on the platform and campaign type. The order matters. Always. Here is how independent hotels should test Google Hotel Ads, TripAdvisor and trivago without handing margin to another intermediary.
Understand what metasearch actually does
It is the shop window, not the till.
Metasearch platforms compare hotel prices and availability across booking channels.
They do not usually create demand from nothing. They capture people already searching for somewhere to stay.
That makes the traffic valuable. It also makes it expensive if your booking path, pricing or tracking is broken.
The main platforms are Google Hotel Ads, TripAdvisor and trivago. Google Hotel Ads shows listings and prices inside Google's hotel search and property comparison experience, generated from your hotel listings and pricing data, including availability, rates and booking options. Campaign management can be connected through Google Ads and Hotel Center. TripAdvisor lets guests compare hotels while researching destinations and reading reviews; TripConnect and paid visibility products can place your direct rate alongside OTA options, though Sponsored Placements are primarily a visibility product, not a substitute for fixing your booking feed. trivago is a price-comparison site built around hotel research and channel comparison; it can provide incremental demand, but it should not automatically receive the same budget as Google.
Metasearch is the shop window. Your booking engine is the till. A beautiful shop window with a broken till still loses money.

Compare metasearch with OTAs and direct search
Do not lump these channels together. They perform different jobs.

Use OTAs for reach. Booking.com, Expedia and similar platforms can put your property in front of guests who have never heard of you. That reach has a cost. At an 18% commission, a £140 room produces a £25.20 acquisition cost before you account for payment fees, discounts, loyalty schemes or additional distribution costs. OTAs are useful when they deliver genuinely new demand. They are wasteful when they take commission from guests who searched for your hotel by name.
Use direct search to capture intent. Google Search Ads and organic search help you appear when someone searches for your hotel by name, a boutique hotel in a nearby town, a dog-friendly hotel near a destination, or wedding accommodation in a region. Branded search is defensive: OTAs often want to intercept it. Destination search is acquisitive: it reaches people who have not chosen you yet. Metasearch sits between the two. It shows the guest your property, your live rate and your alternatives at the moment they are comparing.
Use metasearch to shift the booking channel. Metasearch does not eliminate OTAs. That is not the objective. The objective is to make your direct website visible in the same comparison set, then win the booking without paying a full commission. The guest may still click the OTA. That is normal. You are trying to improve the channel mix, not pretend the OTA market does not exist.
Fix the feed before you buy traffic
Check whether the platform can even receive accurate information.
Do not launch Hotel Ads because someone says you need more visibility. First check whether the platform can receive accurate information.
- A claimed and accurate Google Business Profile.
- Correct property details across each platform.
- A live connection from your booking engine or channel manager.
- Correct room-type mapping.
- Accurate availability.
- Correct occupancy rules.
- Accurate cancellation policies.
- A fast, mobile-friendly booking path.
- Conversion tracking that records completed bookings.
Distribution problem, not a marketing problem
Google's documentation separates campaign management from the underlying hotel feed. Campaigns can be managed through Google Ads, but hotel feeds and pricing information still depend on Hotel Center and the relevant integration. Ask your booking engine provider whether they can connect your rates to Google Hotel Ads, TripAdvisor and trivago, how often availability is refreshed, whether room types are mapped correctly, whether you can see click, booking and revenue data by platform, and whether you can track completed stays rather than just booking-engine clicks. If nobody can answer clearly, stop.
Audit rate parity before bidding
Where many independent hotels lose control.

Your direct rate must not be accidentally more expensive than the same room on an OTA. Equally, you must understand whether a member rate, mobile rate, package or closed-user promotion is creating a misleading comparison.
Do not compare a flexible direct rate with a non-refundable OTA rate and call it parity. That is not analysis. That is guesswork.
Run a weekly parity check across your website, Booking.com, Expedia, Hotels.com and any wholesalers. Record the problem. Find the source. Fix the channel manager or distribution rule causing it. Then create a reason to book direct without publicly breaking parity.
Do not slash the public rate just to win a comparison box. You may gain the booking and lose the margin.
- Check room type, dates, occupancy, cancellation terms, board basis, taxes and fees, payment timing, availability and minimum-stay rules.
- Use a welcome drink, earlier check-in, later check-out, direct booking loyalty credit, better cancellation conditions, a complimentary breakfast upgrade or a direct-only package as your incentive instead.
Start with Google Hotel Ads
For most independent UK hotels and B&Bs, test this first.
It has the largest intent pool. It connects naturally with your Google Business Profile. It also gives you the option of appearing through free booking links when your feed and integration are working correctly.
Start small. Use a controlled daily budget. Do not hand over the entire marketing budget to an automated campaign on day one.
Do not judge the campaign on impressions. Impressions do not pay wages. If the campaign generates £3,000 in direct room revenue and costs £500 in advertising, the headline return is 6:1. That is not the whole answer. Subtract payment fees, cancellations, discounts, booking-engine costs and the operational cost of the campaign. Then compare the result with the commission you would have paid elsewhere.
- One property, one clean rate feed, a limited geographic market.
- A conservative bid and clear conversion tracking.
- A 30-day learning period with weekly profit reviews.
- Judge by direct bookings, room nights, revenue, cost per booking, net revenue after advertising cost, cancellation rate, mobile versus desktop performance, new versus returning guests, and cost compared with OTA commission.
Test TripAdvisor before buying Sponsored Placements
Sponsored visibility cannot rescue a weak listing.
TripAdvisor can work well for independent hotels with strong reviews, distinctive character and a clear reason to visit. It is particularly useful when the property is part of the destination decision.
Start with the direct booking connection and a modest click-based test. Do not buy Sponsored Placements first. Sponsored visibility cannot rescue weak reviews, poor photography, a confusing listing, an uncompetitive direct rate, a slow booking engine or missing room information.
Fix the listing. Test direct traffic. Measure bookings. Add paid placement only when the underlying comparison traffic proves it can convert.
- Use the TripAdvisor Owners portal
Treat trivago as an incremental test
It does not deserve equal budget by default.
trivago can reach guests who are actively comparing prices across multiple channels. That does not mean it deserves equal budget.
Start with a smaller test than Google. Use the same rate feed, the same parity controls and the same booking attribution. Scale only when the numbers justify it.
A platform producing clicks but no completed bookings is not building awareness. It is consuming budget.

Calculate your profitable bid
Set your bid from your margin, never from a competitor's guess.
Suppose your target direct acquisition cost is £15 and your booking engine converts 4% of metasearch clicks. Your maximum sustainable CPC is £15 × 0.04 = £0.60. If your conversion rate improves to 6%, the same target acquisition cost supports a £0.90 CPC. If your booking engine converts at 2%, your maximum CPC falls to £0.30.
This is why sending paid traffic to a poor mobile booking path is financial self-harm. The platform did not suddenly become too expensive. Your conversion rate made it expensive.
Track the difference between gross booking value (the room revenue shown in the booking), net booking value (revenue after discounts, payment fees, cancellations and advertising cost) and contribution (what remains after variable operating costs). Use net numbers when deciding whether to scale.
Maximum CPC = target cost per booking × booking conversion rate
£15 target cost x 4% conversion rate = £0.60 maximum sustainable cost per click.
Decide whether your property is ready
A small property can participate. It cannot participate casually.
Metasearch is worth testing if you have at least a basic volume of direct bookings, a connected booking engine, accurate live rates and availability, a strong Google Business Profile, good recent reviews, enough room inventory to sell, a website that works properly on mobile, and someone who will check results every week.
Wait if you have no reliable conversion tracking, no direct booking engine, regular parity errors, poor reviews that have not been addressed, a website that takes too long to load, no ability to explain your cost per booking, or a budget too small to gather useful data.
For smaller operators, the right approach is usually one platform, one clean feed and one measurable test. Not three platforms, five campaigns and a spreadsheet nobody opens.
Build the direct booking path before scaling
The click is not the win. The completed booking is the win.

Your booking page should show the room clearly, the total price clearly, cancellation terms clearly and direct-booking benefits clearly, with a short path to payment, trust signals, a visible phone option, no unnecessary form fields and no surprise fees at the final step.
Conversion-focused websites and landing pages are built around the next action, not decoration. The same principle applies across local hospitality: remove friction before buying more traffic.

Frequently asked questions
Is Google Hotel Ads worth it for a small independent hotel?
Yes, if the fundamentals are in place: a connected booking engine, accurate rates and availability, a strong Google Business Profile, good reviews and conversion tracking. Start small with one clean rate feed, a conservative bid and a 30-day learning period, then judge results on net revenue after advertising cost, not impressions.
Should I use TripAdvisor Sponsored Placements straight away?
No. Sponsored visibility cannot fix weak reviews, poor photography, a confusing listing, an uncompetitive rate or a slow booking engine. Fix the listing and test the direct booking connection first, then add paid placement only once the underlying traffic proves it converts.
How do I calculate a profitable bid for metasearch clicks?
Multiply your target cost per booking by your booking conversion rate. For example, a £15 target acquisition cost with a 4% conversion rate supports a maximum sustainable cost per click of £0.60. Improving your booking engine's conversion rate raises the CPC you can afford.
What is rate parity and why does it matter for metasearch?
Rate parity means your direct rate is not accidentally more expensive than the same room, on the same dates, with the same terms, on an OTA. Metasearch platforms display these comparisons directly to guests, so parity errors can push bookings to commissioned channels even when your true rate is competitive.
Should trivago get the same budget as Google Hotel Ads?
No. trivago can provide incremental demand, but it should start with a smaller test budget than Google, using the same rate feed and attribution. Scale it only once the numbers show it delivers completed, profitable bookings rather than just clicks.
